<p><strong>Sunday, 19th February 2012</strong> &#8211; 14km, 9 Obstacles and a Very scenic route around town, the <strong><a href="http://www.facebook.com/menshealthsingapore" target="_blank">Men&#8217;s Health Urbanathlon 2012</a></strong> kicked off to an amazing start. The weather was surprisingly very very very nice &#8211; cloudy with not a chance of meatballs plus the cool morning breeze was ever present throughout the whole 14km route. Perfect weather for a run. Like totally.</p>
<p>Once again, I was not only there to witness, but most importantly, experience a run/race unlike any other. Besides it being an <strong>ALL-GUYS AFFAIR</strong>, the Men&#8217;s Health Urbanthlon 2012 was<strong> my FIRST Urbanathlon</strong> and yes, I had the opportunity to run alongside <strong><a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000509078838" target="_blank">Singapore Blade Runner</a></strong>. What up. <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Thinking of taking part in future Urbanathlons? Well, here&#8217;s a quick &#8220;<strong>HOW TO SURVIVE THE MEN&#8217;S HEALTH URBANATHLON&#8221;</strong> guide:</p>

<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>1) DON&#8217;T JUST RUN. BUT WORKOUT TOO!</strong></span></p>

<p>The Urbanathlon requires more than just your running or stamina. Because of the 9 obstacles that is peppered along the 14km route, it is also important to to train your upper body and your grip strength too. Prelude to the Urbanathlon, i was practicing Muay Thai, BJJ and doing my Strength &amp; Conditioning at <strong><a href="www.evolve-mma.com/" target="_blank">EVOLVE MMA</a></strong>. Intense cardio sessions you might say but i also pair it up with my own trainings in the gym (eg. chin ups, squats etc)</p>
<p>If you are new to running and/or had never run the Urbanathlon before, i suggest you do short interval trainings (30secs sprint, 60secs jog) or run up the flight of stairs in a HDB flat to build up on your cardiovascular system. 14km is NOT a short distance, neither is it too far. But nonetheless, you would have to train for it as every race condition is definitely different. Furthermore, you want to cross that finishing line strong don&#8217;t you?</p>
<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>2) SLEEP EARLY, EAT A LOT. LIKE REALLY A LOT.</strong></span></p>

<p>Well, like all races and runs, its always good to have adequate rest to allow your body to be at its optimum level at race time. I slept at 0300H when the race was actually at 0730H. Car-razy! For one thing, its not a great idea to be in a state of rush to get to the starting point you&#8217;ll just tire yourself out. Secondly, rushing means there is a higher chance that you might forget to bring along your important stuffs to the race (eg. race bib, wallet etc). D&#8217;oh!</p>
<p>Food is also important. Just like in any other race, its good to carbo load up or have proper meals the day before. You wouldn&#8217;t want to be all drained out of energy when you&#8217;re half way completing one of the Urbanathlon obstacles do you? Remember, although the Urbanathlon does not require you to carry your field pack ala Standard Obstacle Course in the Army, 14km is gonna burn quite a lot of calories I&#8217;d say!</p>
<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>3) LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.</strong></span></p>

<p>Ok, so this might come across as a <strong><em>duhh-i-know-its-important</em></strong> point, but seriously, not many people take it seriously. It is important to know where the race village AND starting point is. ESPECIALLY if you&#8217;re new to it and is getting there by your own vehicle. Parking can be quite a pain in the ass especially if you cannot find a nearby parking lot. With 2,300 runners taking part in this year&#8217;s Urbanathlon, its best to come earlier and snap up the best lots in town. Or at least one that is pretty near to the race village.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve never been to Nicoll Highway MRT Station before (seriously, who has?!) but after some researching done, i could park my ride at beach road which is just a 5 minute walk away.</p>
<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>4) WHAT&#8217;S A RUN WITHOUT A BUDDY?</strong></span></p>

<p>BORE-RAN! (&#8220;BORING&#8221; with a strong Eastern European accent)  Some of you might be running for fun while others want to beat their Personal Best. Nonetheless, runs such as this Urbanathlon would be much more fun if you have a buddy beside you. Some of the obstacles might see you slow down, take a tumble or simply need some help/motivation. And nothing would be better than knowing your buddy is right there helping you complete it and finish the race strong together.</p>
<p>Now that being said, if you have no one to run with, come early and mingle with the rest of the runners. Chances are you might just find someone who having read this guide, would do the same thing &#8211; looking for a running buddy. And hey presto! You got yourself a new friend. <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>5) DON&#8217;T BE A FISH. DON&#8217;T GET CAUGHT IN THE NET.</strong></span></p>

<p><strong><em>&#8220;Ahhh&#8230; the fish net, kids play.&#8221;</em></strong> you might say. But it is probably the hardest and most time consuming obstacle for me during the race (besides the Down &amp; Dirty, but we&#8217;ll get to that later). As you can see, you would have to climb the bouncy rope web to get to the other side of the truck &#8211; easy peasy &#8211; but with 5-10 others Urbanathletes scampering across the rope web, it kinda shakes the obstacle thus it gets you off balance.</p>
<p><em><strong>Tip: Train your core (doing planks, sit ups etc) as well as hit the gym working on the cable machines as well as the giant yoga ball.</strong></em> I must also add that despite running and climbing on one leg and one prosthetic blade, Singapore Blade Runner managed to complete this tricky part of the race. BRA-VO!</p>
<p><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>6) DON&#8217;T RUN WITH YOUR SPANKING NEWLY-BOUGHT SHOES&#8230;OR ELECTRONIC GEARS</strong></span></p>

<p>Its not because I&#8217;m worried that you have not broken into your shoe but because the last obstacle had the most <strong>Urbanathletes</strong> getting Down and Dirty in 2 containers filled with mud and water. Soaking your legs (up till your thighs) in mud might remind you of the facial mud mask that you had with your GF/wife over in Bali, but i would not recommend anyone to stick their face in them. Although the mud does indeed feel refreshing and invigorating for the tired legs, wearing your latest branded running shoes in them certainly does not (after you come out of the containers).</p>
<p>It would certainly have been better if the mud-concentrated container was the last container so people would be sporting really muddied legs as they cross the finishing line just 750m away! And ouh, DEFINITELY, DEFINITELY a 2nd or 3rd set of D&amp;D obstacle would be great as Singapore Blade Runner and I (and probably along with 50 other runners) were practically waiting 20min before we got jump in the pool&#8230;of mud. Yay!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>People have been asking me why I delve into the realm of martial arts and all these fighting disciplines like Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Thing about me is that i had always been fascinated and WOW-ed by a fighter&#8217;s physique. <strong>Well, just take a look at Bruce Lee or Mitch Chilson &#8211; simply ripped and is epitome of fit.</strong></p>

<p>Going for martial arts classes or picking up such sports<strong> DOES NOT</strong> make you a badass punk nor turn you into a Hulk when you&#8217;re mad. Doing martial arts is certainly very different from what many might think. The purpose and benefits of training in a martial arts discipline outweighs its unsavory image of blood, gore and more blood. <strong>Believe it or not, learning martial arts kinda sets you in a calm state of mind and a feel good endorphin rush as you complete it.</strong></p>
<p>Personally, I have been training at <strong><a href="http://evolve-mma.com/" target="_blank">Evolve MMA Academy</a></strong>, learning Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu there. I have rubbed shoulders with one of the great trainers there who&#8217;ll be taking part in the upcoming ONE FC &#8211; a mixed martial arts event staged right here in Singapore! <strong><a href="http://evolve-mma.com/instructors.html" target="_blank">Eddie &#8220;The Magician&#8221; Ng</a></strong>- this guy trained me in his FIGHT SHAPE class and it was AWESOME.</p>

<p>Coming out of his 1 hour class would often see me all perspiring and smiling to myself because i survived his <strong>High Intensity Training (HIT) Fight Shape</strong> class. Well, along with 10+ other students ranging from 13-year old kids to working women that is.</p>
<p>That being said, i think its important to get a solid, down to earth and great trainer when it comes to picking up martial arts as a sport. I believe there are 3 main things to look out for when choosing or training with a martial arts trainer: <strong>CHEMISTRY, EXPERIENCE &amp; FUN.</strong></p>
<p><strong>1) CHEMISTRY</strong></p>
<p>Just like in any relationship, chemistry is essential between a student-trainer too. You know, sometimes there are some of these trainers who come across as arrogant and in it for the money. You can tell (or sometimes SMELL) by the way the trainers interact with the students (or even you) as they impart their skills during the training sessions. If you ever come across such people, you know that is a sign to say Bye Bye. I&#8217;m sure you can do better with a trainer who makes you feel at home even though you know that he is probably gonna &#8220;kill you&#8221; during that session.</p>
<p>Find trainers who inspire you with more than just certificates, accolades or physique. Get the ones who is driven to change YOU and inspire YOU on a whole different level.</p>
<p><strong>2) Experience</strong></p>
<p>Experience counts. Its important to have trainers who KNOW and UNDERSTAND their discipline VERY well. There is a clear line between an experienced martial artists and one who is not. Trainers who have never fought in their entire career can never be deemed as experienced to me, because seriously, that&#8217;s how it rolls isn&#8217;t it? Someone who has been through a fight or competition (win, lose or draw) has much more knowledge in imparting training methods to you than someone who is merely a textbook &#8220;fighter&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>3) Fun</strong></p>
<p>Lastly, as i always emphasize in any sports which i pick up, it is important to enjoy your training. No point going through it, feeling bruised and battered but you don&#8217;t feel fun. Mentally, you would not want to go for it again and that would be the start of you not coming back for training. True story.</p>

<p>Honestly, having played rugby in primary school and then a season during JC days and lastly, a short stint during my NS Army days, i must say, rugby is one sport which requires team work like no other.</p>
<p>Every single man relies and trusts their buddies beside them to &#8220;protect them&#8221; when they get tackled. Rugby, a contact sport, requires SPEED, AGILITY, POWER, STRENGTH &amp; BRAINS to win the game. Perfect sport for people who desire to up the fitness and physique level. <p>Its been 1 month + 5 days since i last touched a hamburger from McDonalds or any one of those fast food &#8220;restaurants&#8221; like KFC, Long John&#8217;s Silvers, Burger King etc. Well, i plan to stay on track and go fast food free for the whole of 2012.</p>
<p>Unless of course someone offers me $10,000 to have a bite at a new fast food burger. And that had better be a McD&#8217;s Samurai burger at least. ;P</p>

<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;">Heads up running  and/or trail running fanatics! The second edition of the Energizer Singapore Night Trail will take place at Mandai on Saturday 28 April.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;">Registrations have been launched on Monday 30<sup>th</sup> January and this time, the organizers are aiming to attract around 4,500 participants across all race categories following 2,800 entrants for the inaugural event in 2011.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Calibri;">Standing apart from other running events on the Singapore calendar, the Energizer Singapore Night Trail takes place in the (Mandai) jungle of Singapore and challenges you across a range of categories:</span></p>
<ol>
<li>6/12/18km Trail Race for the adults</li>
<li>1.5/3km Obstacle Race for the parent-child</li>
<li>3km Open Obstacle Race</li>
</ol>

<p>Contrary to its name, this blog has grown from merely a running blog to something which covers a wider range of sports and fitness and also health. Inspiring the uninspired to run, bike, swim and train etc. <span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>This post goes out to all those skinny guys and ANYONE who AIMS to achieve something better this year.</strong></span> <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Family members, relatives and friends used to ask/tell me all sorts of questions like<em><strong> &#8220;Why you train so hard?&#8221;</strong></em>,<em><strong> &#8220;Concentrate on your education and not your gym/running stuff.&#8221;</strong></em>,<em><strong> &#8220;Some people people so fit also die early.&#8221;</strong></em> and blah blah blah. Well, this post is gonna be pretty much about me and my journey to reach my goal of achieving a the physique and fitness of a Roman God Bod. <img src='http://s2.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>I must say that i&#8217;ve not reached there YET. Hahaha. Slowly but surely yeah?<strong> This posts goes out especially to all the people out there who is like me, skinny and weak, and seek to have a better bod and fitness level.</strong> I feel you bro.</p>
<p><strong>Anyways, I had always wanted to share my love of fitness and also my interest in weights training to achieve that physique that one can only dream of.</strong> You know, kinda like those Men&#8217;s Health front cover models. ;P I personally started gyming and understanding the different forms of exercises for different muscle groups when i was 17. Yes, i do remember it clearly because that was one of those moments in your life which you realise that your decision had made a great impact to your future self. <strong>Its like a decision to get married or to have a kid.</strong> THAT extreme? YES it is!</p>
<p><strong>First and foremost, i, like many other self-claimed skinny guys out there is what scientist classify as ECTOMORPH</strong>. Also known as a &#8220;hard gainer&#8221; for our inability to gain as much weight even though we might eat the same amount as those we claim as &#8220;fat people&#8221;. We have high metabolism thus we burn more calories faster than what we take in. And guess what? Brad Pitt is an ECTOMORPH too! Yay! Got &#8220;spiritual&#8221; connection liao. Somehow, i feel like Tyler Durden (from FIGHT CLUB) and Achilles (from Troy) now. <img src='http://s2.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

Very hard to gain weight.</p></div>
<p><strong>Yes, i did almost a lot of things to try and gain as much weight, but to no effect.</strong> Chin up regime when i was ard 6-7 years old didnt help much nor did eating a whole tray of rice, chicken and what nots when i was in secondary school. <img src='http://s2.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' />  Okay, i was kidding about the former. Hahaha!</p>
<p>Basically, i was a thin and fragile kid back in my secondary school days. <strong>My weight was always fluctuating between 45-50kg AND FOR A GUY, that is kinda light.</strong> It didnt help that i was a hyperactive kid and participated in outdoor activities as well as sports.<em> (i was a Scout Trooper from 1997-2005 &amp; i played touch rugby from 1997-1999) </em>As much as i tried to eat, my stomach just couldnt take in much calories and i get full very easily. *sigh sigh sigh*<em><br />

<p style="text-align:left;"><span style="text-align:left;">Well anyways, i remember it as clearly as it was yesterday when back then in 2005, a female friend of mine exclaimed to me that i had a weight of a girl as we were taking our Height &amp; Weight during our P.E lesson. There i was already having a hard time to gain weight and such, and there she was popping my confidence-balloons. </span><strong>Although the comments deflated me emotionally, i CHOSE to think rationally and logically and decided IT IS TIME for me to do something.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I couldnt help to see a skinny dude looking back at me whenever i look into the mirror. Could you? OMG! I bet you cant either! It sucks, really. So i decided to hit the gym and learn as much as i could from people, internet and books.<strong> Also at the same time, joining my favourite sport of RUGBY drove me to achieve a better bod and physique as (contact) rugby IS indeed a hardcore sport. </strong>Pick up a sport people. It DRIVES you to be good and serve your team/school well!</p>

<p style="text-align:left;"><strong>Over the course of 2 years in JC, i gained 15kg.</strong> Quite an achievement for me as on the average, i&#8217;d manage to gain only 5kg per year. Of course, i didnt become fat or bubbly as i had constant workout and high level of intensity gyming back then. But still i wasnt happy with my fitness level. Being in the army and doing all the *censored* shit out there turned out to be very useful. I grew leaner with all those morning and afternoon runs and route marches. <strong>And the constant chin-up regime before meals (even as i became a commander), propelled my physique and strength to greater heights.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:left;"><strong>And as my level of fitness grew, my confidence grew too.</strong> I could wear more variety of clothing without making it look like i had an oversized jumper on me. And yes, my post NS days &#8211; when 25 chin ups were no problem and my 2.4km runs were 9min.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Fast forward to this time round, i am happy&#8230;er with what i have accomplished thus far. Participating in sports/activities ranging from  soccer to rock climbing to camp facilitating to kettlebell-ing and etc, it gave me more confidence knowing i could achieve MORE as i play the sport.<strong> I could run faster, kick harder, climb higher and lift heavier weights.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">As of this current moment, the year 2012 will be a life changing year for me as i set out to achieve MORE accomplishments for myself (picking up<a href="http://evolve-mma.com/" target="_blank"> Muay Thai &amp; BJJ at Evolve MMA</a>, getting my swimming fins back to work, just to name a few sports).<span style="color:#ff0000;"> <strong>It will be mentally draining. It will be physically tougher. It will be spiritually demanding.</strong></span></p>

<p><em><strong>What the&#8230;Nike Fuel?</strong></em> My exact sentiment when i first heard it. After much research, review comparisons and going through the video over and over, let &#8220;Dr. Nash&#8221; break it down for you. <em>*DJ hit the beat*</em></p>
<p><strong>What is Nike Fuel?</strong></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Ultimate measure of activity, of sport, of your entire athletic life&#8221;</em> Nike&#8217;s sports science team have come up with a fitness metric called NikeFuel, which is based off the rate of oxygen consumption and motion , a step up from a regular accelerometer . A pretty neat algorithm measure if you ask me. It aims to pick up any motion, any activity so you could be &#8220;shuffling&#8221; your butt off and still it&#8217;d be picked up.</p>

<p>The bearer of the device can now set your daily goal and Nike+ FuelBand&#8217;s 20 colour LED lights tracks your progress, lighting up from red to green throughout the day. Get to green and you’ve hit your goal. Thus, you can make your life like a sport, everyday. Buttons serves to scroll between calorie count, time steps taken, and of course for you to fill er up with your fuel, your Nike Fuel.</p>

<li>With the largest model being as light as 32 grams, I&#8217;m guessing you’ll never even notice that you’re wearing the band&#8230;</li>
<li><strong>AND</strong> it will stay powered for up to four days with two lithium polymer batteries.</li>
<li>It is <strong>WATER RESISTANCE</strong> ensures it stays A-OK in the rain or even in the showers but <strong>NOT</strong> in the pool.</li>

<li><strong>ITS STILL NOT ON MY WRIST&#8230;.YET!</strong> Judging from the specs and features, I could only review as much.</li>

<p><strong>All in all, its a sleek, chic, sexy gadget that looks simple to use.</strong> I just hope it upgrades to serve multiple platforms like Android, Symbian and especially Windows. It will definitely challenge bearers to live life to the fullest and bringing their A-game 24/7.</p>

<p><strong>TUESDAY, 17th JANUARY &#8211; <a href="http://truefitness.com.sg/" target="_blank">TRUE FITNESS</a> launched its 7th outlet at NTUC Income Tampines Junction, Level 8.</strong> Within walking distance from Tampines Interchange, this 24, 000 sq feet fitness sanctuary houses a well-lit and spacious group exercise studio with a members’ lounge area nearby, a consigned hot yoga studio, and a <a href="http://truefitness.com.sg/classes.htm" target="_blank">Spinning</a> studio.  It is equipped with an ubiquitous array of cardiovascular and strength machines. It also boasts its first Muay Thai ring. The layout of the club is well-organized hence I was able to quickly familiarize myself around.</p>

</span></a><strong>The fiesta was set with an array of exciting activities; high energy and enthusiasm filled the atmosphere.</strong> Gracing the night was the presence of Mr Patrick Wee, CEO of True Fitness and celebrities like Paul Foster and Keegan Kang. The first activity I picked was Zumba. I have been doing it for a year and am an avid fan. I could tell that the class was set to its easiest level.</p>
<p>The instructor Mathew was encouraging and I liked that he stepped down to dance together with members. Unfortunately (for me), the Zumba session lasted for half an hour only but that did not indicate the end of my workout&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>I challenged myself to try to Bodystep following that and I admit I struggled to keep up but had fun anyway, laughing with other members who were doing it for the first time too.</strong> Gathering around the boxing ring, CEO Mr Patrick Wee gave a short speech (yes! In the boxing ring itself&#8230; What a brilliant idea for a stage) before everyone witnessed a <em>wai khru ram may</em>, a ritual performed by Muay Thai practitioners before a match. It set the atmosphere for what was coming next &#8211; <strong>a 20-minute Bodycombat special led by True Fitness instructors. A short but intensive work out.</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>I was approached to join the Roundhouse Kick challenge but I was too shy, although I really regretted when I saw the prizes for the top Three winners &#8211; True Fitness hampers, worth more than $200! Not to say I would have won, but at least I could have had a shot at it! <img src='http://s2.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' /> </p></blockquote>

<p>The event was concluded with food and refreshments where I mingled with a few members who turned out to be loyal customers of <a href="http://truefitness.com.sg/" target="_blank">True Fitness</a> because of their extensive range of classes. Its dance classes seemed to be most popular (all the better for someone who loves dancing, like me!). <strong>With more than 30 <a href="http://truefitness.com.sg/classes.htm">classes</a> (check it out!), every individual of every fitness level and preferred mode of exercise can indulge and enjoy.</strong></p>
<p>I certainly enjoyed myself and cannot wait to start on my journey with <a href="http://truefitness.com.sg/" target="_blank">True Fitness</a>. Time to sports suit up and usher in the New Year with a healthy and great body! <img src='http://s1.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
