SINGAPORE, 11th DECEMBER – The finals of the Netball Nations Cup 2011 was to be contested between newcomers Fiji against two times champions and host, Singapore in what was to be another pulsating and tight match. Singapore came into the match as underdogs, having been beaten twice before. Could it be third time lucky for Singapore?
The match started at a frantic pace. The home team, buoyed by a voracious home support matched the Fijians point for point in the early exchanges. Top-ranked Fiji though started to dominate the proceedings as it took an early three point lead after the first quarter. At the second quarter, Fiji continued to show their superiority, conjuring one attacking move after another. Singapore were also let down by some erratic shooting and soon found themselves behind by 10 points going into the third quarter.
The fans were clearly enjoying the match though, constantly cheering “Let’s go Singapore, let’s go!” Singapore obliged and won the third quarter to reduce the gap to seven points with all to play for in the final quarter. It was not to be for the home team as Fiji ended up winning comfortably with a final score of 51-42.
Despite ranking 14 rungs below Fiji, Singapore showed tremendous fighting spirit, constantly putting Fijians under pressure. They may not have the skills and experience of the Fijians, but their courage and never-say-die attitude is admirable.
It was a brilliant finale, and congratulations to Fiji for being the champions of the Netball Nations Cup 2011!
