The Hunger Games: Singapore Edition

As the dust settles from the London Olympics, and Singapore returns with her pair of bronze medals, another opportunity arises for restless hearts to support sporting competition. Come 1st – 9th September, recapture the spirit of sportsmanship by fighting and rallying together with fellow neighbors for the glory of your local community at the Singapore National Games! With close to 5,000 community athletes from the 15 clusters competing over 10 different sports, this upcoming event promises to be equally exciting, albeit being of a smaller scale than the Olympics.

In a brilliant move, the People’s Association (PA), Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and Ministry of Community Development (MCYS) have joined forces to organize the first ever Singapore National Games(SNG); a novel biennial multi- sports festival that fosters unity in the community and strengthens sports excellence. Capitalizing on the impact of the Olympics, this event seeks to be a refreshing and unforgettable sporting festival that ignites the sparks of passion, character building and unity among Singaporeans.

To kick things off for the SNG, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will join an expected crowd of 10,000 on 1st September, 5pm at Punggol Waterway to welcome the inaugural national level multi-sports games for the nation. The SNG will be closed on 9th September, 7pm at Bishan Stadium with Guest-of-Honour, President Tony tan together with a crowd of similar proportions.

With the Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Bowling, Dragon Boat, Football, Netball, Sepak Takraw, Swimming and Table Tennis, these 10 sports will serve as platforms for participants of all caliber, age and gender to attain glory for their respective clusters. They will duke it out amidst cheers of supporters in various battlegrounds all over Singapore. Distribution caps are also placed to ensure national athletes to amateurs are all given chances to achieve victory.

For those who are all fired up to show their support, head down to the following venues to rally behind your cluster representatives, as there is NO ticketing! However, there will be measures for venues with limited capacity to prevent overcrowding, so be sure to come early!

Pre SNG Events:

SNG Baton Relay:

To further strengthen community bonding and involvement for the first ever national multi-sporting event, an island wide Baton Relay will be held concurrently with the annual One Community Walk (OCW), next Sunday, 26th August at 8am, with a total of about 100,000 participants.

Symbolising unity, passion, community togetherness and bonding, the SNG Baton will be passed by approximately 1740 bearers representing 87 constituencies, for a total distance which spans about 174 kilometres across Singapore, after which a message will be read to signify community support for participation in the upcoming SNG.

SNG “Spot the Nila” contest

From 27th to 31st August, 15 uniquely customized cluster mascots which are based on the SNG official mascot, Nila, will be appearing on various locations throughout Singapore to mark the five day countdown to the SNG.

To participate in this “Spot the Nila” contest, Singapore residents will need to capture their encounters with Nila and share the photograph on the official SNG Facebook Page , and the first 10 fans to submit their photographs each day will win an exclusive SNG goodie bag! All winners will be notified via private messaging on prize collections, and hints will also be given out daily on the whereabouts of the mascots on 98.7 FM during the 4-8 pm segment! 😀
