EVENT: The Nike+ Innovation Space

26th July 2012 – In a celebration of sport, youth and human potential, Nike showcased its latest sports innovations, inviting visitors to experience its revolutionary products and engaging events at Peranakan Place (opposite Orchard Central & 313 Somerset).

The Nike+ Summer Innovations: Featured at this year’s greatest sporting event, the London Olympics, Nike has come up with a whole arsenal of performance innovations to better equip their athletes as they go for gold.

1) Nike Flyknit:

The Nike “Swag” Flyknit

Rethinking shoe construction from the ground up, and listening to the voice of the athlete, Nike has come up with the Flyknit, a racer that is designed to be as lightweight and formfitting as possible, all while providing adequate support and structure.

Employing a new proprietary technology with precisely engineering yarn and fabric variations, a size 9 shoe only weighs 160g:19% lighter than the Nike Zoom Streak 3 (worn by top 3 placing men’s marathon athletes at the 2011 world championships).

For non-professionals, fret not, for there is the Nike Flyknit Trainer+, which is an everyday running shoe which provides the benefits of the Nike Flyknit to runners of all levels.

2) Nike Lunarlon

Utilizing foam which is 30% lighter than the standard phylon, Nike Lunarlon technology spreads force out more evenly across the foot with its ultra-lightweight springy cushioning.

Providing protection while improving stability and comfort for enhanced running and workout experience, this technology can be found in this season’s Nike Lunarglide+ 4. Combined with firmer carrier foam and a dynamic support system from a two part midsole made out of opposing wedges of soft Lunarlon foam and firmer carrier foam, the shoe helps move the runner from soft to stable as the heel lands and the foot flexes down.

3) Nike Pro Turbospeed:

The lightest, fastest track uniform that Nike has ever built, the Nike Pro Turbospeed suit is the result of incorporating over 1000 hours of wind tunnel testing for the past 12 years, and is up to 0.023 seconds faster over 100m than Nike’s previous track uniform.

It utilizes a concept similar to the “sharkskin swim suits”, by combining individually customized body part pieces, with different textures that mimics that of a golf ball to maximize velocity for users. Focusing on sustainability, the suit uses an average of 82% recycled polyester fabric and up to 13 recycled plastic bottles.

At this year’s Olympic track events, be sure to look out for the Nike Pro Turbospeed as athletes sprint their way to glory.

4) Nike Ecosystem

The Nike GPS SportWatch! LOVE IT! But its retailing at ard $270.

Expanding into a multi-sport eco system, athletes of any level can now find a variety of devices in a range of colors in the form of the Nike+ Sportwatch, FuelBand, Sportband and running apps.

This will allow for enhanced training experience as users will be able to monitor and tailor their trainings more effectively, record and log their routes and various running speed and times. Users can also enter into a more interactive training community, by recording mileage for events for their schools, countries and various interest groups in upcoming and ongoing Nike events.

Furthermore, Nike Running also has an initiative called RUN TO GIVE – where for every 20km logged on the Nike+ online community from this event, Nike will donate a brand new pair of shoes to AG Home. Would you like to come down to run for charity?

GEAR REVIEW: The Adidas Predator Lethal Zones – are they THAT lethal?

8th June 2012 – The adidas Predator boots have been synonymous with delivering more power, better control and accuracy for the players wearing them. Since its incarnation 18 years ago (in 1994), the Predator series have undergone a tremendous change and upgrade in terms of its design and its focus on the technical aspect of it.

Well, adidas recently unveiled its latest Predator boots – the Predator Lethal Zones. Being a football enthusiast myself, I had the opportunity to try out these boots and give it a go. At first glance, the boots do look weird with all the orange stripes surrounding the ocean blue base coloured boots. However, these “3D stripes” are said to be specifically located at 5 areas or “zones” on the boots which players such as Xavi and Nasri have identified as the spots where they have most contact with the ball. With the 5 “lethal zones” being Sweet Spot, Drive, Pass, Dribble and First Touch, question is – Do these stripes really matter or are they just gimmicks?

 To understand more about each and individual zones, you can check out this VIDEO. But on a personal note, after playing multiple futsal games with it, 3 zones really stood out for me – the First Touch, Pass and Sweet Spot.

FIRST TOUCH

Really really nice. The ball was like stuck on my boots. Trapping the ball was a sublime and receiving fast passes had a nice touch to it.

PASS

With the slightly large padded pass zone, passing was a peach! Its large contact surface also provided better control and precision passing. In simple terms, putting the ball where you want it to go to.

SWEET SPOT

That little raised ribbed section at the part where you use to curl the ball was undoubtedly sensitive. It provided more power BUT at the same time, it curled the ball inwards a little more. A double edged zone i would say as you would have to get used to its sensitivity.

As for the DRIBBLE and DRIVE zones, I did not particularly utilize them as much during my futsal games. Perhaps its my playing style during the games or simply I am not the kind who dribbles and dazzle much in that small confined pitch. Ultimately, I feel that this boots are more suited for the midfield and striker positions where pin point accuracy and power is crucial. As compared to the F50 adizero Prime that I have been using before this, the Predator Lethal Zones are heavier in nature of course they both are in a different league.

The Adidas F50s are nice too. Minimal fancy, and light. The boots of speed as I would call it. While the latest Predators are the Boots of Control.

Although, at the end of the day, it is player who controls how he performs on the pitch, the Predator Lethal Zones boots act like the cheat sheet. It provides better control and more power at every touch of the boots. Personally, I am not a fan of its design (I like my boots flashy, yet simple) as I would have preferred the 5 zones to be blend in with the boot’s base colour. Nonetheless, the new synthetic upper called the Hybrid Touch allows the players to still maintain the suppleness of leather but has 4 times less water uptake and is 40% lighter.

With the retail price set at $309 (last checked at the Adidas outlet at Causeway Point) it is rather on the pricey side of boots. There is however, a lower grade model which is priced at $169. The texture of the ribbed zones are not as superb as compared to the higher grade one though. Duhh? I cannot say about its performance though because I have not tried them out. That is not how we roll here. 

All in all, the boots excelled in its first touches and passes giving the player a slight edge over its opponents. A rather technical pair of boots, the “lethal zones” increase the sensitivity of the touches one makes with the ball. It is a pair of boots worth investing in if you are one of those regular weekend football warriors and/or playing for your school team.  I would also advise you to try them on with socks  and get a half-size bigger for your feet if you want to avoid blisters. 🙂

You can win and lose your games. But don’t ever lose your friends because of it.

EVENT: NIKE ‘The Chance” Singapore Finals

Singapore, 3rd June 2012 – 5 young football-enthusiast have been given Chance in a lifetime to represent Singapore in the global football competition spearheaded by Nike. Called “The Chance”, it will eventually see 100 players from 55 countries around the world traveling to FC Barcelona’s famed youth academy and undergo evaluation by a world-class team of coaches and scouts. The best 16 footballers from the global finals will be chosen by Nike to experience the ultimate training tour as their reward; facing some of the most renowned academy teams in world football – including Manchester United and a U.S. Youth National Team during a once-in-a-lifetime four week tour!

The 5 boys that made it through to the Regional Finals are: Muhammad Afiq Bin Mat Noor (19 years old), Muhammad Al Nazirul Islam Bin Abdul Razak (20 years old), Muhammad Faris Bin Ramli (19 years old), Randy Pay Zhan Hao (21 years old) and Sim Li Ming (23 years old).

However, the journey for these 5 are far from over as they would have to battle it out for the Top 4 places in the Regional Finals. Competing against 15 other selected players from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, the boys would certainly have to shine, deliver and just do it if they are ever going to impress the coaches and scouts. Because only the top 4 would proceed on to the global finals in Spain. 

Are Singaporeans good enough?

Competitions like these would have most of us asking – “Can our Singapore boys REALLY stand out and deliver in this global competition?”. Perhaps against the likes of our South East Asian neighbours, they might, if they do not buckle under the pressure AND have a tremendous amount of fitness. I mean, these boys will be training in Indonesia and definitely, the weather there would affect their performances. The only way to combat that is to always have high-level of fitness so that they can adapt quickly in most conditions.

However, judging from their built and size, should they proceed on to the global stage, this factor could go against their favour. Although there have been small built players who have excelled in the sport (think Lionel Messi), I doubt we would ever have our very own Singapore “Messi”. With the way our education-system is run, Singaporeans are more likely to pursue a career in a more “stable and recognizable field” besides sports. Not many people get much out of chasing their dreams or passion in playing sports. Some quit half way. Some get injured. Some grow a little too old too fast (like you and me) to get a chance at stardom. 😛

But hey, I guess that is what Nike “The Chance” is all about. Giving our HOMEGROWN talents that one opportunity to beat the odds and chase their dream in football. For what is worth, that is what I would like to see more in the future. Now that they have been selected, seems like these 5 boys would have to go out there and well….JUST DO IT. 😉

P.S, the boys get to train in Nike’s latest range of boots – the Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII. Sadly, I cant say much about the feel and performance of the boots except that it does look rather nice on Cristiano Ronaldo’s feet. Would look nicer on mine I’d say. Haha.

GOOD STUFF: How To Transition into Vibram Five Fingers (or any Minimalist Running Shoes)

While searching and checking out more stuffs on the Vibram FiveFingers technology, i chanced upon this site WHICH is kinda “affliated” to the idea of barefoot running. Not bad huh? So i felt that since most people are going to try out the shoe (Vibram) anyways, might as well one needs considerable information regarding the TRANSITION INTO RUNNING “BAREFOOT”.

Chances are you’ve just purchased your first pair of Five Fingers, or are considering getting a pair. They’re a lot of fun, and you’ll likely soon find yourself with a near permanent case of the ear-to-ear grin.

But this is a double-edged sword, because if anything, Vibrams and Minimalist shoes are too much fun.

If you don’t learn to go slow in the beginning, sooner or later the perma-grin you’re experiencing may be replaced with a perma-ouch.

Running in Five Fingers feels so much like being a kid all over again. They’re just so much fun we can’t help but overdo ourselves. We go too far, and too fast, before our feet our ready, and then BLAMMO, we hit the dreaded ‘setback’.

But this doesn’t have to be the case. If you go slow, and let your skin be your guide (more on this in a minute) you’ll build the strongest, healthiest, happiest feet in the world, capable of mile after mile of near effortless enjoyment, fast and free in or out of your Five Fingers.


But first, we need to wake things up slowly. Unfortunately, modern shoes have weakened our feet.

In short, our feet have been asleep for years, trapped in a dark, narrow constrictive boot that’s shortened, weakened, and stiffened our muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and left our bones weak and brittle. We can build them incredibly strong and supple, but it takes time. If you do too much before they’re ready, you risk tendonitis, muscle tears, strained ligaments, or stress fractures.

To avoid all of this, you need to go slow, and consider tiny distances to begin with.

Let your skin be your guide

Over time, your Five Fingers can help you become the strong, efficient, healthy and fast runner you were born to be. But to transition safely, you need to first feel the ground by going fully barefoot. If you take the time to feel the ground, build your feet, and develop your stride, you greatly diminish your chances of injury when it comes time to slipping on your Five Fingers.

When you run fully barefoot, you learn to run incredibly light, because you can fully ‘feel’ the ground and your impact. Most importantly, when your skin gets raw and tender, you stop and head for home. There aren’t too many people out there that’ll push through raw skin or a blister, at least NOT on an easy training run. That’s why I always tell my runners, “Let your skin be your guide.”

When you let your skin be your guide, you protect everything underneath the skin. The challenge with the Vibram’s isn’t that your skin gets raw, it’s that it doesn’t. You also don’t feel the cumulative damage you’re doing to weakened parts on the inside of your foot.

  1. First off, your muscles are still asleep, and aren’t used to the new stride yet.
  2. Second, even if the muscles are ready, the tendons that attach the muscles to the bones are still asleep.
  3. Third, EVEN if the muscles and tendons are ready, your bones haven’t grown beefier to handle the muscles and tendons pulling at their attachment points. You also haven’t developed the flexibility for the foot to handle a full range of motion, stride after stride, mile after mile. And last, you haven’t developed the ‘padding’ in your foot, to help naturally cushion the impact.

Add all of this up, and you’ll find if you do too much too quickly, you’ll soon tear your feet apart.

If you buy the Vibrams, have fun exploring in them. Just don’t go running too far in them just yet. Instead, invest in your future with a month or two of barefoot running first. Consider this foot conditioning, or boot camp for your feet, to wake them back up, and help them get strong. So, before running far in your Vibrams, begin running fully barefoot, and let your skin be your guide (3rd time repeating this!).

Even if you think all is good, it’s likely not the case. Our bodies build with the use-it or lose-it principle and the principle of ‘specificity’. This means if we use something we get stronger, if not, it goes away. And it means if we’re used to a specific movement, we get stronger for it, and if not, we lose the ability (at least in the short run) to perform that specific movement. These two principles dramatically affect our feet and transition into Vibrams and barefoot running.

 

Ways in Which Our Feet are Weak

1.) Our Arches are Asleep

With ‘great arch support’ found in traditional running shoes, our strong and springy arches haven’t had to work.  Moreover, by relying on arch support, we’ve locked out one of nature’s greatest shock absorbers and stabilizers, and reduced our arches to mush. They can be rebuilt and raised up stronger than ever; however, you have to start slow.

Wisely, the Five Fingers are built with minimum arch support. That’s great for letting your foot do the work. But, if you do too much too fast, your muscles won’t be able to handle the new workload. Instead, you’ll force the job onto your plantar fascia, the band of easily-upset connective tissue running the length of the bottom of your foot. It was never meant to handle such force, and can quickly lead to Plantar Fasciitis.

 2.) We’ve Lost Flexibility

Our incredible foot flexibility and dexterity has been eliminated by stiff soles and over-effective ‘motion control’ systems. Our feet were meant to bend and flex, fore and aft, and to the sides. This allows us to absorb impact, use the foot as a spring, and handle uneven terrain and rocky surfaces.

We once had incredibly flexible feet – just look at those of a baby. But now our feet have become as rigid as our shoes. While we NEVER twist our feet in our shoes, that’s exactly what you’ll need to do in your Five Fingers for terrain, propulsion, and shock absorption. It’s a big part of what makes us feel ‘free’. However, building this flexibility takes time. Do too much too fast, and you risk tendonitis, strained ligaments, tears, or even a stress fracture by putting new forces on your feet.

3.) Our Achilles and Calves Have Weakened and Shortened

Ever taken a close look at the heel of your shoe? Chances are it’s almost an inch high or GREATER. Now, I’m not talking about high heeled shoes, but your RUNNING shoes. Supposedly, this high heel helps ‘protect’ our foot with extra cushioning. But what it really does is prevent your foot from its full range of motion.

Our bodies adapt to raised heels by shortening our achilles and calves. To add insult to injury, when we’re forced to heel strike, we lock our achilles out of the equation. The achilles can handle almost two tons of force if fully strengthened, but in a modern running shoe that promotes heel striking, it hasn’t had to work.

The Vibrams and most minimalist shoes however, allow you to use a more ‘natural’ stride, and that means landing on your forefoot, loading your achilles and calf, and springing back with each step. That’s why the achilles was built so strong in the first place and it takes time to build them up again. Work your calves and achilles too much and too soon and you’ll pull and strain these muscles and tendons, or literally tear them apart.

4.) Our Incredible Toes Have Become Unbelievably Weak

Did you know 18 out of 19 muscles and tendons of our feet connect to our toes? Mother Nature wouldn’t have done this if the toes weren’t vital to our feet. Unfortunately, our poor toes have been asleep for years. Look at your current running shoes. See how high the front of the shoe is off the ground? That’s called ‘toe spring’.

Shoe manufacturers add toe spring to help your foot roll more easily. Now look at your foot. Are your toes up and off the ground? Far from it! We grab with our toes, support ourselves with our toes, and keep our arches strong with our toes. Strong toes and the attaching muscles are essential for our stride and healthy feet. When you have strong toes, you have a strong foot.

But in a shoe with toe-spring, there’s no way for our toes to spread, grab, or feel the ground. This atrophies all connecting muscles, making them incredibly weak. Wake up your toes too quickly and you’ll start tearing your feet apart. GAAAAH!

REVIEW: The Nike LunarEclipse+ 2

(Shoe review by our running and fitness kaki – Taufiq)

At first glance, the LunarEclipse+ 2 looks pretty remarkable with the simple colour combination of neon orange and green with a base colour of black. The fact of the matter is that it is definitely an impressive shoe with some heavyweight specifications to its name. You will find the Lunareclipse+ 2 incredibly comfortable when you first put the shoe on for the first time. True story.

The shoe is generous with its inner cushioning that fits and wraps around nicely around your feet making it a joy to walk in. The sole cushioning is plentiful as well which starts from the toes all the way to the heel. LunarEclipse+ 2 has a good heel support on the achilles tendon and along with the heel cushioning, makes the shoe ideal if you want to hit a good mileage for your run.

The LunarEclipse+ 2 is definitely made for long-distance running. It is a little heavy for my liking but I understand the need to substitute lightweight for long-distance comfort and durability. Another issue about the shoe is that the midfoot portion is narrower and since I tend to purchase shoes half a size smaller, there was a slight ache on my foot when I wore the shoe for long periods of time. I recommend that you try the shoe out in person and make sure you have the right size which is comfortable for you as the portion for the toes is also slightly narrower.

Spotted: adiZero Feather @ iFLY Singapore

Adidas launched its latest model in its adiZero range of shoes – the adiZero Feather. With tons of new specs to the new running shoe, surprisingly, the shoe weighs much less than a conventional running shoe! Weighing at only 190gm (men’s size) and 160gm (women’s size), it IS light i tell you. 

Adidas has further reinforced the adiZero Feather with 3 new features:

The SPRINTFRAME – 

The unique platform (directly attached to the upper) of the shoe which defeats mid foot flex while allowing torsion. Allowing independent movement of the forefoot and rear foot. Meaning: more stability for your midfoot as you run

The adiPRENE –

Adidas special cushion element which acts as a rebound cushioning element for minimizing energy lost. Meaning: with lesser energy required to run, runners will get to run further and faster which gives a competitive edge in competitive races or to chase for your Personal Best.

The SPRINTWEB –

A lightweight mesh construction with engineered reinforcement which gives the runner not only breathability for the feet but also stability. Meaning: as above. Hahaha!

With such specs and techs of the shoe, one cannot wait but to try it out for my runs and training workouts in the future. The shoe isnt only meant for running but it could double up as a workout shoe too! Im sure its gonna turn heads. I know cause i have had 5 friends who saw me in them telling me that the shoe looks really bright and cool. Doh!     >.< Hahaha!

I mean SERIOUSLY, the specs and techs of the adiZero must have been something as it helped the world’s FASTEST man, Patrick Makau to shatter the world marathon record in a time of 2:03:38 hours at the Berlin Marathon held last Sunday in Germany. Maybe, just MAYBE i could achieve my own PB in future races, who knows?

Now, Adidas held the event launch of adiZero Feather at iFly Singapore, the world’s largest indoor skydiving simulator! I was giving the opportunity to don on the flight suit and experience my first ever indoor skydiving. Seriously, i think it beats indoor snow HANDS DOWN. ANY TIME. Period.

I must say that i didnt have much photos with me at the moment cause seriously, my battered and beaten iPhone 3GS really needs an upgrade. Nonetheless, as always, Haffiz is there to the rescue with his spanking new iPhone 4S (ok im just kidding, just iPhone 4) to help capture the pre-flight moments.

All in all, the flight experience was really awesome! Got to go 3 times and what ever hand signals that the instructor taught us before the flight, wasnt much of a use cause we were all flying everywhere and rolling over falling down and all! Funny much! But hey, I LOVE the experience man! Cant wait to try and do a tandem jump or skydiving on my own some day. Looking forward to that day certainly!
